Dubai is known for its towering skyscrapers and luxurious lifestyle, but its desert is a vast, serene contrast to the city’s urban environment. It offers adventure, culture, and tranquility. Here are the top activities for a desert trip Dubai visitors can book.

Go on a Desert Safari

A desert safari is the most popular Dubai desert safari experience. It combines dune bashing in 4×4 vehicles, camel rides, and an evening of cultural performances like belly dancing. It gives visitors a look at the desert and its traditions.

Rev Up for Quad Biking

For adrenaline junkies, quad biking through the dunes is a desert ride in Dubai where you take control and cross the sand at your own pace.

Sandboarding

Sandboarding means gliding down the dunes. It is a popular activity, easy to learn and thrilling, and a good addition to a desert tour Dubai itinerary.

VIP Safari Experience

A VIP safari is more personalized and luxurious than the standard trip. It includes private tours, gourmet dining under the stars, and premium services.

Hot Air Ballooning at Dawn

A hot air balloon ride gives you a view of the desert at dawn. Floating above the dunes as the sun rises, you watch the desert come alive with colors and shadows, a tranquil Dubai desert safari experience.

Soar Above the Dunes on a Paramotor

Paramotoring over Dubai’s desert gives you a bird’s eye view of the dunes and the freedom of flight.

Eco-friendly Dining on the Sands

End the day with an eco-friendly dining experience on the sands. It is a sustainable, peaceful finish to a day of adventure, in keeping with the principles of conservation and respect for nature.

When to Go and What to Wear

Winter is the season for the desert. Dubai Municipality treats October to April as the camping season, and balloon operators generally fly from about October to May. After sunset the sand cools quickly, so a light jacket or shawl is worth carrying for an evening trip.

Wear light, breathable clothes and closed shoes. They protect your feet from hot sand and give you grip on the dunes. Add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. In summer, book the morning option or stay indoors for the hottest hours.

Plan your time with some care. A morning safari takes around four hours. An evening safari runs six to seven hours with transfers, but the dune driving itself usually lasts only 20 to 30 minutes. A balloon flight is 45 to 60 minutes in the air, and the whole outing, including the early pickup, takes four to six hours.

Safety and Licensed Operators

Dubai regulates desert tourism. Tour operators need a Dubai tourism licence, and the Roads and Transport Authority licenses the drivers. Gulf News reported that drivers must hold a tour guide certification from Dubai Tourism and an RTA licence, give passengers a safety briefing, and use child car seats. Before you pay, ask the operator for its licence number.

  • Seat belts stay on. Reputable drivers will not start the dune drive until everyone is buckled in.
  • Balloons have their own regulator. Operators work under the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority. Flights are cancelled in strong wind or poor visibility, and reputable operators offer a refund or a new date.
  • Driving yourself is different. Dubai Police advise lowering tyre pressure, switching to four-wheel drive, driving slowly and carrying an off-road safety kit. In an emergency, call 999.
  • Camping has rules. Dubai Municipality does not require permission for one or two nights in the open desert, but longer stays need permission and a fee. Dumping rubbish or lighting unauthorised fires can bring a Dh500 fine.

Where to Go: Lahbab, Al Marmoom and Hatta

Lahbab. Dubai Police name Lahbab, Al Aweer and Margham as the main dune-driving areas, and most standard safaris run in this part of the emirate.

Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. Managed by Dubai Municipality, it is the first unfenced nature reserve in the UAE and covers about 10% of Dubai's land. It includes the Al Qudra Lakes and an 84 km cycling track. The quiet and the dark skies suit stargazing, and the Dubai Astronomy Group holds events in the Al Qudra area.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. A separate, fenced reserve of 225 square kilometres, about 5% of Dubai's land. It is home to the Arabian oryx, which has been reintroduced there. Access is limited to resort guests and a small number of operators, so book through them.

Hatta. About 130 km from Dubai, roughly 90 minutes by car. Hatta Dam is the draw for kayaking and picnics, and Hatta Wadi Hub runs zip lines, trampolines and other adventure activities on a seasonal schedule, so check opening dates before you drive. We cover the dam and other green spots in our guide to the greenest places in the UAE, and the longer-term plans for Hatta and the reserves in Dubai's green future to 2040.
